Performing a design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a time and cost-intensive team work. The potential for cost and time reduction of an FMEA lies in its algorithmic method. This method can be implemented in deterministic programs with certainty, allowing for the automatic generation of almost the full FMEA-model.  The ability to generate an FMEA-model at any time ensures synchronization with other engineering work products. It also allows engineers to quickly identify unacceptable risks and implement necessary changes throughout the development process. The FMEA team must still review a generated FMEA-model and take the necessary steps to achieve the requested quality.

This paper is a summary of our experience and lessons learned from implementing a tool to automatically generate a design FMEA-model for use in the automotive industry.
